Good Samaritans of Garland, Inc. is a social
service agency attending to the needs of those who are experiencing financial difficulties. The main services available through
grants are rental assistance, utility assistance, food, and referrals. Kathleen West, the author of Relic was led to the ministry of Good Samaritans in 2001. She stayed for three years as Executive Director, another
year as Development Director, and then left to write this book.
Returning to Good Samaritans as Executive
Director in August of 2006 brought a whole new insight for Kathleen. She saw the real challenges of the people she was called
to serve, challenges she had met when she was homeless nearly thirty years ago. That’s when she decided to dedicate
100% of her own profits from the sales of the Limited Collector’s Edition to a discretionary account for Good Samaritans
which will provide the funds to pay motel rooms for the homeless during extreme weather, help the elderly with prescriptions,
buy bus passes for people who have found jobs and can’t get to work or who are looking for jobs, purchase formula and
diapers for babies whose mothers are not on WIC, help pay the rent and utilities for those who don’t qualify under the
regular grants, and much more.
None of the money from the sales of these
books will go towards her salary as Executive Director. The entire donation will go to help the agency and its clients. It is what she is called to do, and by pre-ordering a copy of her book, you are
helping her attain that goal of providing more through Good Samaritans of Garland, Inc. She has also pledged to herself to
make smaller donations to other causes dear to her such as animal shelters and children’s services.
